About Vashnie Sithambaram:
Introduction
I am a qualified Clinical Psychologist registered with the HPCSA and BHF. I completed my Masters in Clinical Psychology at the University of Pretoria in 2022. I thereafter went on to complete my internship at the 1 Military Hospital, and my community service at the Tembisa Hospital in 2021 and 2023 respectively. Subsequent to my training, I began working at the Akeso Hospital in Umhlanga in March 2024 where I run inpatient group sessions. My working experience has afforded me several opportunities to work with both an inpatient and outpatient population presenting with a myriad of disorders including but are not limited to, Depression and Bipolar, Anxiety, PTSD, Schizophrenia, Substance use disorders, as well as Personality disorders. I also have experience with several psychometric assessments and report writing.
Although I have been trained in many therapeutic modalities including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Psychodynamic Therapy, Narrative therapy, Dialectic behavioural Therapy and Solution Focused Behavioural Therapy, my work as a therapist involves taking an eclectic approach to therapy, focusing on the unique needs of each client and the interconnection between mind, body and spirit. My aim is to provide a safe, nurturing and empowering space where clients are able to explore their behaviours, thoughts and emotions trusting that they will be held and guided throughout their healing journey.
MY SERVICES INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING:
• Working with teenagers and adults with the following disorders.
Depression
Depression is often the amalgamation of the biological, psychological and social stressors in a person’s life. It is a real and painful struggle for many and therefore requires therapeutic intervention. Depression is more than just the depressed/ low mood and lack of motivation. It stems from emotions that are much deeper, and with the right guidance from a therapist and a safe nurturing space, clients are able to gain a deeper understanding of their suppressed emotions and unspoken words that may be leading to their depressive symptoms.
Anxiety related disorders
Anxiety presents in so many different ways, including constant worry, panic attacks, and avoidant tendencies amongst others. However, in essence anxiety is just surviving. It causes a person to live life constantly worrying and anticipating the worst to occur. With the right intervention and containing therapeutic management, clients are able to live their lives and not just survive it.
Bereavement/Grief
Loss of any kind is a deeply personal and unique experience. Although it is common and a very necessary process, it can often become complicated if one does not address it at the earliest. Grief is not just about the loss of another person, object, or job. It is about the loss of life and reality as we once knew it to be. Therapeutic interventions therefore focus on the processing of the past and the welcoming of the future, establishing a new identity and embracing the change that it will bring.
Trauma
Working with Trauma often entails working with the mind, body and spirit because a person is a beautiful combination of all of these spheres. When a traumatic experience occurs (psychological, physical, financial, etc.), it may cause a person to remain stuck in any of the above spheres, seeing life through the lens of which this trauma has created. This oftentimes penetrates through all areas of a person’s life, affecting their personal, professional and social life. Working with trauma therefore allows the client, with the help of a therapist, to unravel these holds and be able to live their life fully and confidently.
