About Raksha Singh
Introduction
l am a Registered Counselling Psychologist with the Health Professions Council of South Africa. I have a Masters degree in Psychology with 24 years of experience.
l aim to ensure that therapy is a safe place where patients can:
1. Access unconscious negative patterns, as a source of wisdom and guidance, to promote healthy psychological growth.
2. Explore trauma and negative life experiences with an intention of healing.
3. Create awareness of the ability to live a happier and more fulfilled life in the face of adversity.
l strongly believe in holding a space for patients based on empathy, acceptance and non-judgment that respects the whole of an individual’s experience, rather than pathologising their experince of reality.
Theoretical Training:
I haven trained in numerous modalities including psychodynamic therapy, cognitive behavioural therapy, transactional analysis, narrative therapy and solution focussed therapy.
However, each patient is indivually assessed and therapy is tailor made according to their individual needs.
My underlying philosophy is best summed up as
“Know all the theories, master all the techniques, but as you touch a human soul be just another human soul” -Carl Jung
Areas of Practice:
lndividual Psychotherapy:
Psychotherapy is a comprehensive, long-term approach typically aimed at identifying an issue’s root to change the way we think and behave.
l believe that we all born with the capacity to experience joy, love and happiness, but life experiences including trauma, abuse, loss and stress can result in symptoms
that causes us pain and prevents us from leading happier lives.
This includes a range of presenting problems such as:
Depression
Anxiety
Trauma
Post traumatic stress
Bereavement and loss
Work Stress and Adjustment.
Couple counselling:
In couple counseling l view the relationship as the patient and look at all the ingredients necessary to build a healthier and more fulfilling bond.
Sessions are aimed at:
1. Identifying and understanding the separate needs of each partner
2. Learning more effective communication and conflict resolution skills
3. Enhancing the relationship through exploring different love languages
Addiction:
My view of addiction is that it is not a choice that anyone makes, a weakness in character or a moral failure, but the inabilty to bear pain and gain emotional pain relief.
Addiction is manifested in any behaviour that a person finds temporary pleasure or relief in, and therefore craves it, with an inabilty to give it up despite the harm that it causes.
By this definition we are not only talking about Drugs and Alcohol but all manner of addictive behaviour such as Sex, pornography, gambling, eating, and gaming.
So the first question in addiction for me is not ‘why the addiction’ but ‘why the pain’.
This is achieved by looking at peoples life experiences, traumas and suffering, while assisting patients in understanding addiction and the steps involved in recovery.
